LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall rolled to a 9-0 win over Hobart in the men's squash season opener on Sunday. The #10 Diplomats (1-0) used a freshman heavy lineup to topple the #25 Statesmen (1-2). All nine scoring matches and the exhibition were decided 3-0.
Six of the 10 players that saw action on Saturday were making their first appearances on the college squash circuit. All six played in the scoring portion of the lineup, including Sujat Barua, Justin Singh and Aadit Zaveri, who played in the top five.
Barua dispatched Daniel Pelaez 11-6, 11-5, 11-3 at No. 2, while Singh topped Grant Palermo 11-5, 11-4, 11-8 at No. 3. Zaveri defeated Luke Esselen 11-4, 11-6, 11-8 at No. 5.
Sophomore, Guilherme de Melo, played at the top of the Diplomats' lineup and cruised to an 11-4, 11-3, 11-2 win over Corey Kabot. de Melo improved to 21-5 in his career with the victory.
The Diplomats return to action on Friday night in one of the sport's top matchups of the early-season. F&M will host #6 Cornell in Mayser Center. F&M owns a 26-24 lead in the series, but has not defeated the Big Red in 14 tries dating back to the 1998-1999 season.
