Middies Top F&M Wrestlers; Bucha, Ely, Knapp Secure Wins

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After falling behind 9-6, Navy took five-straight bouts to hand Franklin & Marshall a 32-13 setback in an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) match at Halsey Field House Friday night.

The Midshipmen (1-0, 1-0 EIWA) jumped on the board first with Jericho Urmentia (1-3) collecting a forfeit at 125. After dropping 133 and 141, Eric Flipowicz (9-4) strung together six takedowns to knock off the Diplomats' (0-4, 0-3 EIWA) Andrew Murano (1-5) 14-4.

Flipowicz's win put Navy back in front, 10-9, and kicked off the decisive run. Navy quickly expanded the lead to seven points early in the second period of the 157-pound bout when #6 Bryce Saddoris (14-1) stuck Eric Norgard (1-5). It was another ranked wrestler that sealed the victory for Navy. #18 Luke Rebertus (11-2) pinned Matt Latessa (0-6) in the final minute of the first period to put the match out of F&M's reach.

Colin Ely (4-2) snapped the Navy run on points in the 197-pound bout, picking up his 20th career victory in the process. Ely used five takedowns, two escapes and slapped on a riding point for a 13-5 major over Chance Rauscher (2-5). The win avenged Ely's loss to Rauscher at the Navy Classic and moved him to 2-2 against Navy's 197-pounder. Ely is undefeated through four dual meets this season.

Jake Bucha (8-0) remained undefeated on the season using five takedowns for a 12-8 decision of Allen Stein (7-6) at 133-pounds. His victory halved the six-points the Diplomats spotted the Midshipmen at 125.

Kenny Knapp then gave F&M its only lead of the night, pinning Joe Locksmith with 29 seconds left in the second period. Locksmith escaped at the start of the period to gain a 1-0 lead, but found himself quickly taken back to the mat by Knapp. Locksmith broke free to knot it up at 2-2 and then got caught in the middle of an ill-fated throw that cost him the match.

Mike Lanids (8-5) squeaked out a 3-2 decision over Dan Canfield (2-5) at heavyweight scoring the decisive takedown with 61 seconds left in the night's final bout.

F&M is idle until December 28 at the Wilkes Open.
