PITTSBURGH – Duquesne recorded back-to-back pins in the
opening bouts of a 33-12 win over Franklin & Marshall's
grapplers Friday evening. The Dukes (3-4) took each of the first
four matches before Jake Bucha, the first of three F&M
wrestlers to secure a win, got the Diplomats (0-10-1) on the
board.
Bucha (17-4) halted the early Duquesne run with a 17-3 major at
Jake Swink's expense, but not before the hosts had built a
21-0 lead by stringing together a pair of falls, a decision and a
forfeit. Anthony Bongarzone and Matt Fullowan picked up consecutive
wins for F&M at 165 and 174 pounds. Bongarzone (8-8) pulled
away for good on a second period takedown in his 9-4 win over Nate
Reinhart. Fullowan (17-7) dominated Matt Gregg with a tech fall at
the first period buzzer. In his first action since January 17, the
Diplomats' sophomore rolled up back points with several turns
with his legs.
F&M returns to action for the final dual meet of the season
next Friday night. The Diplomats will face Millersville in the
annual Battle for the Rupp Cup, named after Theodore Rupp, F&M
class of 1935. Rupp, who coached both F&M and Millersville,
including one year at both institutions, passed away Wednesday
evening at the age of 94. Millersville is has won both meetings
since the trophy match was introduced in 2008.
