Diplomats Sink Navy, Tipped by Ephs

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's men's squash team split a home Saturday, defeating #14 Navy 6-3 before falling 5-4 to #10 Williams. Four Diplomats (11-8) were double winners on the day.

No. 1 Gabriel de Melo, No. 2 Guillherme de Melo, #No. 4 Juan Lopez, and No. 6 Pat Cunningham each worked through the day unscathed. Gabriel de Melo (14-5) toppled Navy's captain Nils Mattsson and Williams' top player, Ethan Buchsbaum, each in three games. The hot handed sophomore has won seven consecutive matches and 10 out of his last 11. de Melo's younger brother, Guillherme (16-3), defeated Navy's Allan Lutz in three, and Williams' William Morris in four to run his winning streak to five. Morris managed to take the third game.

Lopez (12-8) rolled up a pair of 3-0 sweeps, while Cunningham (12-8) swept his Navy opponent and needed four to provide the only victory on the bottom half of the ladder in the loss to the Ephs (13-6).

Trips to Lancaster have been Navy's albatross. The Middies' (24-7) have now lost eight of their last nine matches at F&M, though they still hold a commanding series lead at 31-16. Ben Lurio's (9-8) hard earned win in the eighth position left the Diplomats needing a single match for the clincher in the middle of the day. After taking the first game from Navy's David Koenig, Lurio dropped the next pair. He rallied for a pair of 11-8 wins to give the point to F&M. While the Diplomats needed only one more to match to secure victory, they managed to take two more, including the No. 3 position occupied by Sadiq Madraswala.

Madraswala (12-7) dropped the second and fourth games to Ben Mantica, but edged him 11-9 in the decisive game. He was on the floor for the decisive game in the match against Williams. Trailing 2-1 in the match and 8-2 in the final game, the senior attempted to rally and force a fifth. He managed to get within a point, but ultimately fell 11-7 in the fourth. Madraswala, along with classmates Zarir Aibara and Justin Moore were honored prior to their final home match.

The Diplomats are idle until the men's team nationals at Yale next weekend.
