LANCASTER, Pa. - Millersville won seven bouts to earn a 29-16
victory over Franklin & Marshall in the third annual battle for
the Rupp Cup Friday evening. The Diplomats fell to 0-11-1, and the
Marauders improved to 4-13-1.
F&M surrendered a forfeit to start the meet at 125. The
Diplomats picked up a forgeit of their own at 133 to tie the score
6-6. Matt Murray pinned Matt Devestine 59 second into the 141 match
to put F&M up 12-6.
Following the 141-weight bout, Millersville won five consecutive
matches to take the lead. Colin Ely (5-12) put up four points,
winning a 13-0 major decision over Brent Barr in the 197. The
Diplomats forfeited the heavyweight class for a final score of
16-29.
This year marks the third year of the Rupp Cup, in honor of Ted
Rupp (F&M '35), who coached both the Diplomats as well as the
Millersville wrestling teams between 1935 and 1943. He was the
founder of the Millersville wrestling program in 1946, guiding the
squad through 12 straight winning seasons. Following receiving his
B.A. in history from F&M, Rupp earned his M.A. from Penn State
and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. During his
tenure at Millersville, Rupp was also a professor in French and
Spanish. Sadly, Rupp passed away on Wednesday, February 10 at the
age of 94.
Millersville holds a 16-3 advantage in the all-time series
against F&M, dating back to 1994.
