ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Franklin & Marshall started its buzz
saw weekend with an 8-1 loss at #3 Rochester Friday evening. The#12
Diplomats (9-6) got a win at the top of the ladder, but fell in
three in the subsequent matches with the #3 Yellowjackets
(7-2).
Gabriel de Melo (9-6) picked up his second win in as many
matches and moved to 8-2 in his last 10 with a five game victory
over Rochester's top man, Jim Bristow. Bristow, a three-time
All-American, had knocked off the Diplomats' number one,
Nadaav Tannen, in last year's meeting. de Melo dropped the
first game, but bounced back with a six-point edge in the second.
Facing elimination in the fourth game, de Melo posted an emphatic
11-2 win, then took the win with an 11-9 effort in the fifth. The
Diplomats' sophomore is now 22-7 in his career.
de Melo and the Diplomats return to action tomorrow with matches
at Cornell. The Diplomats will face #6 Cornell and #16 St. Lawrence
on Saturday before wrapping the weekend up at Hobart on Sunday.
