LANCASTER, Pa. – Davidson won four of the seven bouts contested to take a 27-15 decision from Franklin & Marshall at Mayser Center on Friday. Ike Crews pin at 184 sealed the win for the Wildcats.
The Diplomats' (0-5) Matt Latessa (1-9) rolled up a 4-2 lead in the first period on a pair of strong doubles. Crews (7-7) took advantage of Latessa's choice to work from the bottom in the second, slipping in a half and pinning the F&M junior 38 seconds in. The victory gave the Wildcats (1-1) an insurmountable lead, 24-9.
William Ray's (5-7) first period takedown and subsequent back points gave him a large enough lead to outlast Andrew Murano (2-8) at 149 pounds, despite surrendering a pair of points for stalling. Tyler Mullen (9-6) earned a 7-4 decision over Anthony Bongarzone (1-9) at 165, while Charlie Wolff (9-3) posted a 6-2 decision over the Diplomats' Dan Canfield (2-8) at heavyweight.
The feature bout of the afternoon was the first of the day. After F&M (0-5) ceded the 125-pound bout, Jake Bucha (12-1) picked the ankle of Alex Radsky (14-3) late in the third to take a 4-1 decision. The teams' captains traded escape points, but Radsky's came after Bucha had amassed the time necessary for the riding point.
F&M's Eric Norgard (3-7) finally broke the third period ride of Brent Mowry (4-4) with a second showing on the clock to eek out a 7-6 decision. Mowry countered a Norgard shot 27 seconds into the final period to take a 6-5 lead. It appeared that Norgard was about to get neutral with 10 seconds remaining, however, Mowry was able to maintain his advantage, and that became his undoing. The scramble left Norgard sprawled on top of Mowry. He was able to break the hands free from his legs and roll the Wildcat to the mat at the buzzer for the win.
Matt Fullowan (9-7) picked up the Diplomats other win, earning a 6-4 decision on the strength of a first and third period takedown of Scott Patrick (5-4).
The Diplomats forfeited 125 for the third-consecutive match, while Davidson gave up 197 pounds for the second time in as many duals this season. F&M forfeited 141 following a late arising injury to the only wrestler weighed in for competition.
F&M returns to EIWA action tomorrow afternoon against Princeton. The noon match will be streamed free on GoDiplomats.com.
