LANCASTER, Pa. – Ninth-ranked Gabriel de Melo upset third-ranked Benjamin Fisher, but it was the only win Franklin & Marshall could muster against fourth-ranked Rochester at Mayser Center Friday evening.
After squeaking out a 13-11 win in the first game, Gabriel de Melo (9-3) dropped a pair but won the final frames, seven and five. The win over Fisher marks the highest-ranked opponent Gabriel de Melo has defeated in his career. It was one of four matches that went to five on the night. Half of those matches saw the final game decided 12-10, including the match at No. 2.
Gabriel de Melo was refereeing that match. At 11-10 in the fifth, he was forced to call a stroke against his brother, #26 Guillherme (10-6), who was facing #29 William Newham. With the stroke, the younger de Melo fell 12-14, 7-11, 11-7, 12-10, 12-10.
#28 Mauricio Sedano (5-5) also took #22 Hameed Ahmed to the brink, but fell 11-8, 11-7, 6-11, 8-11, 12-10.
