PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall took three of the final four matches to outlast Penn, 5-4, in a men's squash showdown between two of the top-10 teams in the country on Thursday. The No. 8 Diplomats (5-4) have now won five of their last six, while the No. 9 Quakers (3-4) fall for the third time in a row.
Alex Arjoon gave F&M the early advantage with a four game win at No. 4. Arjoon rebounded from a 5-11 loss in game one to down Trevor McGuinness with 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 triumphs in games two through four. The Quakers responded with a win at No. 8 to tie the score at 1-1, before Guilherme de Melo moved to 9-0 on the year at No. 2 with an 11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5 victory over Dan Greenberg.
Penn proceeded to nab wins at No. 6 and No. 9 to take a 3-2 advantage after five matches, but the Diplomats came through with three straight victories to wrap up the crucial road win.
Mauricio Sedano notched the only straight game victory for F&M at the No. 3 spot with an 11-6, 13-11, 12-10 win over Daniel Judd to even the score at 3-3. Aadit Zaveri then edged Justin Ang in a back-and-forth battle at No. 7 (12-10, 8-11, 12-10, 5-11, 11-8) to give the Diplomats the lead, before Ryan Mullaney posted a four-game victory at No. 5 (12-10, 7-11, 11-4, 14-12) over John Dudzik to clinch the win.
F&M returns to action this weekend with a trio of matches at the Pioneer Valley Invitational. The open play against Tufts on Saturday at 11:00 am.
