Diplomats Battle Shorewomen to a Draw

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's women's soccer team battled Washington College to a 0-0 2OT tie in Centennial Conference (CC) action Saturday at Tylus Field.  The result brings the Diplomats' record to 2-5-6, 1-3-4 CC, while the Shorewomen move to 6-7-1, 2-5-1 CC.

F&M's offense was on the attack in the first half, firing six shots and forcing Washington College's goalkeeper Rebecca Potochney to make four saves.  The Diplomats defense was stingy, allowing only two shots from the Shorewomen.

With the match tied 0-0 in the second half, F&M's offense had back-to-back golden scoring opportunities in the 54th minute.  Nancy Epstein fired a left-footed blast from 20 yards out that bounced off the crossbar.  Less than a minute later, Kelly Lang collected the ball on the left side and fired a shot that landed just wide of the far post.  Both squads registered four shots in the second, but neither could take advantage and had to settle for a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation.

The Diplomats' defense did not allow Washington College to get a shot on goal in the first overtime.  F&M registered two shots but was unable to capitalize.

With seven minutes left in the second overtime, F&M nearly broke the tie when Stephanie Bartner placed a ball off of a free kick into the box to Carley Nicholson.  The senior fielder received the pass and directed a header to the net but fired the shot just wide of the goal.

Selena Boro broke past the defense with 2:46 left on the clock but missed the net just wide.  Not wanting to settle for their sixth tie of the season, the Diplomats had one last opportunity with a minute left on the clock.  Boro once again had a scoring chance but narrowly missed the net when her shot sailed to the left of the goal.

F&M outshot Washington College 18-8 on the afternoon, while also holding the edge on corner kicks, 7-0.  Goalkeeper Amanda McGowan recorded four saves.  The defense did not allow a shot on goal in either overtime period.

The Diplomats face off against Gettysburg on Wednesday in CC action.  The contest is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
