Durso Grabs Second at Mat-Town Open

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Richard Durso secured second place to highlight a group of three Franklin & Marshall placewinners at the Mat-Town Open on Saturday. Durso nabbed second at 141 pounds, while Andrew Murano and Colin Lahiff both finished fifth at 149 and 165, respectively.

Durso has now earned a spot on the medal stand at each of F&M's three tournaments to open the season. The sophomore won the Ursinus Fall Brawl on Nov. 10 and took third at the Navy Classic on Nov. 17. Durso jumped out to a fast start with an opening-round 8-0 major decision over Bloomsburg's Dan Gaylord, before also shutting out Lock Haven's Gavin Pejakovich by a 6-0 decision to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, Durso took down Derrick Evanovich of Maryland by a 5-1 decision, but dropped a 4-1 decision to Chris Mecate of Old Dominion in the championship bout to settle for second.

Murano reached the semifinals at 149 with wins by decision and major decision in his first two bouts. The junior edged Lock Haven's William Randt 5-3 in his opener, before topping Hofstra's Dan Manley 11-3 to move to the final four. Murano then dropped his next two bouts and claimed fifth via an injury default victory over Brennan Brumley of Old Dominion.

At 165, Lahiff began the day with a 6-4 decision over Brooks Morrison of Virginia Tech, but was stopped in the second round by Pennsylvania's Bradley Wukie, 7-2. Lahiff responded with a 3-1 record in the consolation bracket to grab fifth.

Other Diplomats who posted multiple victories on the day included Robert Ruiz (133), Rob King (157), and Chuckie Kerkesner (285). Ruiz went 2-2 including his fifth career pin, while King also went 2-2 and recorded a pin, his third of the year, to move to 9-6 in his freshman campaign. Kerkesner also notched a 2-2 mark with a pair of tight wins by decision, eventually falling in the consolation quarterfinals.

F&M returns home next Friday for its first dual match of the season against VMI at 8:00 p.m.
