HANOVER, N.H. - No. 7 Franklin & Marshall edged No. 8 Dartmouth 5-4 in a key early season men's squash matchup on Sunday. The Diplomats improve to 4-2 with the victory, while the Big Green fall to 4-2.
Pedro Veiga de Almeida, Alex Arjoon, Antonio De La Torre and Jack Cutler set the tone for F&M with straight-game victories in the narrow win. Almeida downed Michael Mistras 11-6, 12-10, 11-6 at the No. 4 spot, Arjoon notched a 13-11, 11-7, 11-7 triumph over Kyle Martino at No. 5, and Cutler cruised to a 11-3, 11-7, 11-8 win at No. 8.
At No. 2, Mauricio Sedano secured a four-game victory against Robbie Maycock. Sedano took the opening game 11-7, but Maycock bounced back with an 7-11 win of his own in game two. Sedano then finished off Maycock with scores of 11-7, 11-3 to earn the point for F&M.
Guilherme de Melo (No. 1) and Sujat Barua (No. 9) each put up valiant efforts in defeat for the Diplomats, both falling in the fifth and decisive game. de Melo dropped an 11-9, 11-6, 8-11, 8-11, 11-7 contest to Chris Hanson, while Barua was edged 4-11, 11-8, 11-7, 8-11, 13-11 by Bayard Kuensell.
The Diplomats return home Friday to take on Rochester at 6:00 p.m.
