ITHACA, N.Y. - Franklin & Marshall fell to Cornell, 9-0, in men's squash action on Friday night. The No. 8 Diplomats' (8-5) five-match winning streak comes to a close with the loss, while the No. 6 Big Red (9-3) have now won four of their last five.
The final 9-0 margin was not indicative of the competitiveness of the contest, as two matches stretched to five games, another went four and the majority of the scores up and down the lineup were tight.
At the No. 1 spot, Guilherme de Melo nearly knocked off one of the country's top players, Nick Sachvie, but came up short in five games to fall for the first time this year. After Sachvie took the first two games, 11-7 and 11-3, de Melo bounced back with 11-6 and 11-8 wins in games three and four, before Sachvie outlasted the F&M junior in the deciding game, 11-6.
Pat Cunningham's match at No. 8 also stretched to five sets in a back-and-forth battle. Cornell's Bryan Keating captured game one, 12-10, before Cunningham answered with 11-5 and 12-10 triumphs in the following two games. Keating then outlasted Cunningham 12-10 in game four and closed out the win, 11-1, in the final game.
At No. 7, Freddy Hernandez posted an 11-9 victory in game three over Ryan Todd, but ultimately came up on the losing end (11-3, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9).
F&M returns to the court on Saturday at Rochester at 12:00 pm
