F&M Battles Haverford to Draw

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Despite multiple scoring chances throughout the contest from both squads, Franklin & Marshall and Haverford had to settle for a 0-0 2OT tie on Saturday evening in Centennial Conference (CC) women's soccer action at Tylus Field.

The Diplomats moved to 4-2-3, 2-0-2 CC with the result, while the Fords record now stands at 4-2-4, 1-0-2 CC.

Both goalkeepers were on top of their game throughout the 110 minutes of competition as offenses from each team kept the net minders on their toes. F&M's Amanda McGowan (4-2-3) handled all six shots she faced, including a pair of diving stops in the opening half.

The first of those astounding saves occurred in the 28th minute when a long Haverford shot from five feet outside of the box and to the right side of the net was snagged by a diving McGowan.

With only two minutes remaining in the first, the Fords slipped behind the Diplomats defense and launched a low shot to the left of the F&M goalkeeper who once again dove to the ground to make the save and keep the score knotted at 0-0.

The Diplomats best scoring chance in the opening frame came in the 20th minute when the Haverford goalkeeper misplayed a ball directed back into their zone. Spencer Plante jumped on the miscue firing a shot on goal that had to be blocked by a Fords' defender, just inches from sneaking into the net.

With five minutes remaining in the second, F&M once again had a chance to get on the board when Stephanie Bartner lined up for a free kick and sent an opportunity in the box that deflected off the head of teammate Brianna Reid and to the right of the net.

After a scoreless 10 minutes of action in the first overtime, both squad's offenses came out in the second playing aggressively in the opening minutes.  Haverford lined up for a free kick three minutes into the frame and sent an opportunity on net with multiple Fords in front of McGowan. However, the senior goalkeeper managed to fight through a swarm of opposing players and snag the ball out of the air.

The Fords outshot the Diplomats 22-8, including a 4-1 mark in the overtime periods. Haverford also held the edge on corners at 7-1. Goalkeeper Robin Chernow (4-2-4) of the Fords stopped all three shots she faced on the night.

F&M returns to the field on Wednesday when the Diplomats travel to McDaniel for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
