ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Richard Durso ran through the 141-pound draw at the Navy Classic on Saturday, earning a first-place finish for the Franklin & Marshall wrestling team. The Diplomats wrapped up competition with a 12th place showing out of 14 teams.
Durso earned a first round bye as the bracket's top seed before starting his run of four-straight victories. The junior opened with a 9-3 decision over Mike Carole of Cleveland State before winning by technical fall in the third. In the semifinals, Durso edged out Tyler Small of Kent State with a 5-2 decision before taking down Richard Krop of Princeton by fall in the finals.
Jason Bing went 1-2 on the day, dropping a 6-4 decision in the championship bracket before earning a 9-3 decision in the consolations. Robert Ruiz picked up a bye in the opening round of the 133 bracket before bowing out in the secon. In the consolations, Ruiz took down teammate Scott Stevens by a 5-3 decision before finishing out the day with a 6-2 loss in the next round.
At 165, Rob King took his opening two bouts by decision at 4-1, 4-3 respectively, before dropping a bout by fall in the third. Chuckie Kerkesner was dropped by Daniel Santoro of Princeton by a 9-8 decision in the opening bout of the 197 draw.
Alex Henry battled in his opening matchup at 285 but dropped a narrow 3-2 decision. In the consolations, Henry earned a 3-2 decision before falling in a 4-1 decision in the next round.
The Diplomats return to action on Sunday when F&M travels to compete in the Mat Town Open, hosted by Lock Haven.
