LANCASTER, Pa. –Franklin & Marshall dominated Sacred Heart with a 43-0 shutout on Friday evening in Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) action at the Mayser Center. The Diplomats picked up their first dual win of the season and now sit at 1-2, while the Pioneers fell to 1-2.
The shutout marked the first for the Diplomats since Jan. 13, 2006 when F&M blanked Delaware State by a 40-0 score.
The Diplomats cruised to the victory over Sacred Heart off of four decisions, three pins, two major decisions and a tech. fall. Jason Bing got the action underway at 125 with a commanding 15-3 major decision over Joe Harris.
F&M followed with three-straight pins from Robert Ruiz at 125, Richard Durso at 141 and Sharron Townsend at 149 to put the Diplomats out in front by a 22-0 margin. Andrew Murano earned F&M's second major decision of the evening with a 14-5 victory that included six takedowns to make the score 26-0.
Rob King was in control throughout his bout at 165, taking an early 11-1 lead after the first period against the Pioneers' Johnny Vrasidas on his way to a 17-1 tech. fall win.
Ahead at 5-4 heading into the third, Colin Gironda picked up an early reverse before Zachary Moran countered with an escape, followed by a takedown, to even the score at 7-7. Gironda sealed the victory at 174 with an escape in the closing seconds en route to the 9-7 win.
The Diplomats closed out the dual with three-consecutive decisions that included wins from Paul Alessandrini (7-2), Chuckie Kerkesner (14-10) and Alex Henry (285).
F&M returns to the mat tomorrow when the Diplomats head to Millersville for the Mid-Penn Duals. Round one kicks off with a matchup against York at 10:00 a.m.
