Diplomats Place Two at Mat Town

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Richard Durso took first for the second straight year and Patrick Quinlan placed third to pace the Franklin & Marshall wrestling team on Sunday afternoon at the Mat Town Open, hosted by Lock Haven. 

Wrestling unattached, Durso rattled off four straight wins, earning a 10-0 major in his opening bout, followed by a pin and a 6-2 decision to reach the championship match at 149. In the finals, Durso secured first with a narrow 9-6 decision over Daniel Neff of Lock Haven. 

Quinlan bounced back from an opening-round defeat at 133 with three straight victories to register a third-place finish. In the battle for bronze, Quinlan took down Maryland's Adam Whitesell by a 10-7 score. 

Following an opening round loss at 125, Dan Martoccio recorded a pair of wins, including a 12-0 major and a pin to reach the consolation semifinals but fell by a 7-1 decision in his quest for third. 

A trio of Diplomats competed at 141 and was led by Robert Ruiz, who landed a 16-5 major in the championship bracket. Samuel Butler fell in his opening bout, but reached the semifinals of the consolation bracket with a 6-1 decision and a medical forfeit. Jason Bing was upended in his opening match but secured a 7-0 decision in consolations. 

Rob King nearly placed at 157, earning a pair of victories in the championship bracket with a 9-4 decision and a pin to reach the semifinals, but came up short to eventual champion Elias Biddle of Lock Haven. 

Colin Gironda recorded a pair of wins in the consolation bracket of 165 before bowing out by a narrow 2-0 decision, while Jacob Conners also competed for F&M, earning a dominant 17-0 major decision against Dominic Lincalis of Lock Haven. 

At 184, Anthony Mancini avenged his opening-round loss with an 11-2 victory in consolations, while Alex Henry and Isaiah Cromwell each picked up a win in the championship bracket of 285 before falling in the next round. 

F&M returns to the mat on Saturday to host George Mason at the Mayser Center for the Diplomats first home dual of the season. Action begins at 7:30 p.m.
