Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. – A late goal from Brianna Reid in the 87th minute gave the Franklin & Marshall women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Penn St. – Berks on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Diplomats earned their first win of the season and sit at 1-1, while the Nittany Lions fell to 0-1.
It was an even match for most of the afternoon as both defenses were strong throughout. In the 87th minute, F&M's Kim Kornbluth chipped the ball 10 yards in front of Penn St. – Berks' net and Reid knocked it in for her first goal of the season giving the Diplomats the eventual 1-0 victory.
In the first half, scoring chances were at a minimum as both defenses did not allow many chances. However, in the second half, F&M found more opportunities to score as Spencer Plante received the ball after a corner kick in the 60th minute, but her shot sailed just wide of the cage.
At the 35 minute mark, the Diplomats' Alexa Yarish nearly found the back of the net off of a shot from 15 yards out, but Nittany Lions goalie Savannah Cramer made the save to keep the game tied at 0-0.
With just over 10 minutes left in regulation, Plante had another good opportunity to score, but the shot went wide left as the score remained tied at 0-0 until Reid's goal ended the contest.
Plante registered a team-high five shots for F&M, while Dana Sarcinello recorded three shots for the Nittany Lions.
Shannon Johnson-Finn (1-0), who came in for starter Caroline Letner with 30 minutes left in the match, registered one save and picked up her first win as a Diplomat. Cramer (0-1) notched five saves, but received the loss.
F&M returns to action next Saturday when the Diplomats travel to take on Roanoke at 5:00 p.m.
