LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall claimed a pair of Centennial Conference (CC) contests on Saturday afternoon, defeating Bryn Mawr (116-82) before edging Swarthmore 133-129. The wins keep the Diplomats' record perfect on the year, now 3-0 overall and 3-0 in the CC.
Franklin & Marshall took the lead early against Bryn Mawr, with the team of Anna Hess, Melissa Mullin, Jillian Albus, and Alyson Campbell winning the 400-yard medley relay in 4:13.43.
Hess continued a fine start to her college career by collecting another first place, finishing the 200-yard IM in 2:19.88 to take the honors. Senior Courtney Collins finished second in the event with a time of 2:21.93.
Campbell also struck individual gold, claiming the 100-yard freestyle with a winning time of 58.27. Stephanie Schick (59.87) took second at while Kellen McDonald (1:00.44) finished third.
The 200-yard freestyle saw the Diplomats fill the top four spots, as freshman Diane Wagner took top honors with a time of 2:08.20. Allison McCarthy (2:10.11) finished second, Katie Schick (2:11.24) took third, and fourth went to Jane Posner (2:12.49).
F&M continued to collect points as Breann Cavanagh came in first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:13.74. Second place honors went to Rebecca McCain with a time of 11:48.12.
Erin Smith's victory in the 100-yard breaststroke was the sixth Diplomat win of the day, finishing in 1:15.19.
McCain and Stephanie Schick both doubled up second-place finishes, with McCain taking silver in the 500-yard freestyle. Schick was the runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle, which also saw Smith take third in 27.67 and Grace Pereles finish fourth in 27.80. Taylor Mateja also recorded a second-place effort in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.79.
The Diplomats faced a sterner test in the second contest of the day against Swarthmore. The team of Hess, Mullin, McDonald, and Albus got F&M off to a good start, winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:06.98.
McDonald went on to earn multiple individual victories, taking first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:15.47 before claiming the 100-yard butterfly at 1:01.64.
Becca Meyers took multiple individual crowns as well, winning the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:35.45. She also took the victory in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:08.55 before finishing off her day with a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.
F&M got two more strong finishes from Anna Hess, most notably her victory in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:13.54. A runner-up finish in the 100-yard backstroke rounded out her day of competition.
Albus added to her winnings in the 50-yard freestyle, earning the win with a time of 25.68 before finishing second in the 100-yard freestyle at 55.89.
Both Cavanagh and Mullin contributed a pair second-place finishes and the team of Albus, Campbell, Collins, and Hess locked up the victory by taking silver in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
The Diplomats look to continue their strong start to the season on Friday when Johns Hopkins visits for a 6:30 p.m. meet.
