STAMFORD, Conn. – Pedro Veiga De Almeida, Sean Kenny and Cole Osborne all earned wins in their opening matchups on day one of the 2016 CSA Individual Championships Friday in Stamford, Conn.
Competing in the Molloy Division A and D draws respectively, the trio of Diplomats' hopes of All-America status remain alive as the winner of each bracket is bestowed the honor.
De Almeida (ranked No. 57) opened action with a tightly contested 3-2 (13-11, 7-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-9) thriller over No. 40 Justin Restivo from MIT. Tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. he advances to take on No. 25 Harry Freeman of Cornell in the bracket's quarterfinal round.
In the D draw, No. 36 Sean Kenny rolled to a 3-0 blanking (11-7, 11-5, 13-11) of Williams' John Fitzgerald (No. 61). He advances to tomorrow quarterfinals for a 1:40 p.m. meeting with Navy's Jack Herold who is ranked No. 29 in the country.
Osborne fought back from a 12-10 loss in the opening game by winning the next three by 11-7, 11-4, 11-8 scores, triumphing over Trinity's Nku Patrick (No. 69) in the round of 16. Competition continues for Osborne in Saturday's D draw quarterfinals with a 1:40 p.m. match against No. 60 Ziad Elmandouh of Denison.
