LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's women's soccer team fell behind early and was unable to mount a comeback, dropping a hard-fought 1-0 contest against Haverford on Saturday afternoon at Tylus Field.
The Diplomats fell to 3-4-1, 0-2-1 CC with the defeat while the Fords improved to 4-2-1, 2-0 CC.
Nine minutes into the contest, Haverford saw the game's first scoring chance when the Fords' Anna Dekle fired a shot from 15 yards out that goalkeeper Gabby Panayotakis made a spectacular diving stop on.
Emily O'Hara threated to even the game in the 16th minute, nearly taking advantage of a broken play in the box, but her deflection was handled by Haverford's 'keeper.
A minute later, the Fords broke through when Grace Mathis threaded a short cross to Raina Fitzpatrick, who sent a sliding shot into the lower left of the far post for the eventual game-winner.
The Diplomats' defense rose to the occasion in the second half, and along with a number of clutch saves from Panayotakis, managed to keep the Ford's off the scoreboard. Scoring opportunities eluded F&M in the final frame, however, as Haverford rolled to the CC victory.
Overall, the shot count was in the Fords' favor at 17-3, along with corners at 7-1. Reanna Leoni, Sam Springer, and O'Hara were all credited with a shot apiece.
Panayotakis (3-4-1) was charged with the loss after registering six saves while her counterpart Julie Hanss (4-2-1) earned the win with two stops on the day.
The Diplomats continue CC competition on Sunday, Oct. 1 with a 1:00 p.m. contest on the road against Swarthmore.
