HAVERFORD, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall's women's soccer team battled Haverford on the road Saturday but came up short in a 3-1 defeat in Centennial Conference (CC) competition.
The loss dropped the Diplomats to 1-5-1, 0-2 CC while the Fords improved 4-2, 2-0 CC.
Haverford struck first in the game's 22nd minute when a through pass led to a one-on-one opportunity for the Fords. Grace Mathis took advantage of the chance, beating F&M's goalkeeper and putting her team in front at 1-0.
F&M's defense buckled down from there and held Haverford scoreless through the remainder of the opening frame as the Fords entered halftime with a 9-4 lead in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corners.
The 1-0 Haverford lead held until the 65th minute when the Fords' tacked on with a short cross in the box that led to a goal from Sydney West.
With just four minutes remaining in the second half, F&M cut into the deficit with Kirsten Heine's second score of the season. Ryan O'Rourke sent a short cross to Heine, who fired a shot from six yards out to make it a 2-1 game.
However, Haverford put the contest out of reach for good in the closing seconds when Mia Reyes beat the Diplomats' goalkeeper in another one-on-one opportunity for the two-goal win.
Overall, the shot count favored the Fords at 18-9, as well as corners at 10-3. Allison Klei and Sam Springer paced the F&M offense with two shots each.
Diplomat goalkeeper Tara Hessenthaler (1-2) suffered the loss despite her five-save effort on the day. Haverford's Hanna Friedrich (3-0) earned the win after recording one save in 45 minutes of competition.
F&M returns home on Wednesday, hosting Dickinson for a 5:00 p.m. match at Tylus Field.
