LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's women's soccer team rolled to a 2-0 shutout of Goucher on Saturday afternoon in non-conference competition.
The Diplomats improved to 3-1-1 on the season while the Gophers evened their overall record to 3-3.
F&M struck early when Emily Cleary took a feed from Meg O'Callahan and one-timed a shot into the right side of the net, giving the Diplomats a 1-0 advantage in the ninth minute.
The one-goal edge held for the remainder of the first half as F&M entered the break with the narrow lead.
Following 45 minutes of play, the Diplomats held a 6-3 edge in shots, including a 3-1 margin with shots on goal. F&M dominated corner-kick opportunities in the first half by a 5-1 tally.
Seven minutes into the second half, F&M had a golden opportunity to add on with back-to-back close-range shots. Emilee Adami generated the second scoring chance by causing a turnover deep within Goucher's defensive third and firing a low shot to force a diving stop by the opposing goalkeeper.
In the 72nd minute, a costly Goucher foul in the box led to an O'Callahan penalty kick. The first-year midfielder made good on the scoring chance, finding the back of the net for her second goal of the season and the 2-0 lead for F&M.
The Diplomats' defense held steady for the remainder of the contest to earn the team's second shutout of the season. F&M outshot Goucher by an 18-5 margin with a 12-2 advantage in the second half.
Nicolette Runko led the offensive effort with four shot attempts while Christina Marinos followed with three.
Goalkeeper Tara Hessenthaler (2-0-1) was stellar in net, registering four saves through 90 minutes for her second shutout of the season.
F&M opens Centennial play next Saturday, hosting Muhlenberg for a 6:00 p.m. tilt.
