Crawford Marches to Finals of 10th Annual Lehman Open

LANCASTER, Pa. – John Crawford continued to shine for the Franklin & Marshall wrestling team as he knocked off a nationally-ranked wrestler on his way to the finals of the 10th Annual David H. Lehman '68 F&M Open on Friday. Crawford ultimately fell in that championship bout, but continues to put together an impressive collection of victories during his junior campaign.

Crawford (197 lbs.) started his tournament with a technical fall and 13-8 decision against a pair of EIWA foes before just missing bonus points during an 8-1 win versus Air Force in the quarterfinals. The Diplomat then knocked off Max Shaw of North Carolina - the second-seeded and 33rd-ranked wrestler nationally - with a third period escape and takedown to secure a 5-3 decision. During his appearance in the finals, Crawford ran into top-seeded and 28th-ranked Jake Koser of Navy, dropping a 10-2 bout. With his string of victories to reach the championship bout, Crawford became the sixth Diplomat in program history to make the finals of this home tournament.

Headlined by Crawford, the Diplomats advanced fifth individuals to the quarterfinals where Mason Leiphart (125 lbs.) and Noah Fox (174 lbs.) were ultimately amongst the top eight finishers at their respective weight classes. Leiphart continued to rack up the points on top with two more technical falls, giving him a Division I-best nine on the season. He also had a 12-2 major decision during his round of 32 victory, as all three of his wins came against EIWA opposition. Fox started in the Round of 64 with a major decision, fall, and 8-5 victory against ACC power North Carolina before running into the third seed of his bracket. Fox bounced back with even more bonus points via a 10-2 major decision before a narrow 5-4 loss against NC State's Dylan Reinart during his sixth and final bout of the tournament.

James Conway (184 lbs.) and Cenzo Pelusi also joined their aforementioned teammates in the quarterfinals. Conway defeated opponents from Presbyterian, Navy, and ninth-seeded Air Force before a tough bout with Lehigh's second-seeded and multi-time national qualifier Tate Samuelson. His tournament closed with a hard-fought 9-7 battle against Penn. Pelusi notched a pair of wins against EIWA foes from Penn and Navy, also besting an opponent from Kent State, before a pair of two-point decisions fell in favor of his opponents.

Seniors Jack Bruce and Chris Hisey both advanced to the round of 16 during their final collegiate appearances at the Lehman Open. Bruce (125 lbs.) knocked off the No. 9 seed during his opening match and racked up two more victories in the wrestlebacks. Hisey (165 lbs.) bested Columbia's Chim Tasie-Amadi by a 3-1 decision before falling to a pair of military school opponents.

Pat Phillips made it the round of 16 with a pair of major decisions to start his Lehman Open and teched his foe from Army during a three-win day. Aidan O'Shea (133 lbs.), Bryce Kresho (149 lbs.), Hunter Hockensmith (149 lbs.), and Nick Alvarez (157 lbs.) showcased the team's talent in the middle weights with two wins each. Alvarez secured technical falls against Sacred Heart and North Carolina State to notch his two victories, while O'Shea, Kresho, and Hockensmith each recorded falls during one of their two victories.

Wrestling will continue its busy weekend by running the Tyrant duals throughout the remainder of this weekend. The Diplomats resume their own competitive schedule next Saturday, January 14 with a 7 p.m. dual against EIWA foe Drexel back inside the Mayser Center.
