LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall men's squash team doubled up No. 23 Middlebury, 6-3, to close its opening weekend of the 2023 calendar year with back-to-back victories. With a number of closely contested matches throughout the lineup, the Diplomats showed great balance as they won the top three and bottom three positions on the ladder.
Petr Nohel (No. 1) and Kyle Broadhurst (No. 3) each capped a perfect 3-0 weekend for themselves individually. Nohel found himself trailing 1-0 at the top of the lineup, but cruised to the next three games and pushed his record to 6-4 this season. Broadhurst split his first two games, but allowed just nine points the rest of the match to clinch the victory. The Diplomats' first-year is now a team-best 7-3 during his individual matches this year.
Jordan Sprecher (No. 2) had the only sweep of the day for Franklin & Marshall as he allowed just 12 points, including an 11-1 triumph during the second to complete the sweep across the top third of the ladder. Sam Freed clinched a five-game victory at No. 7. He raced out to a 2-0 lead before his opponent claimed consecutive 11-9 games. Freed would nevertheless regroup and take the decisive game by an 11-8 score. Evann Tan and Akshat Agarwal each won 3-1 matches, rallying for their victories after dropping their opening games.
Men's squash will be back at home next weekend, with that slate opening on Saturday, January 14 against St. Lawrence at 3 p.m. Next Sunday, the Diplomats host Hobart in a 12:30 p.m. start inside the Mayser Center.
