Bryce Kresho Sheridan Tournament

Wrestling Competes at Sheridan Tournament

12/20/2024 9:05:00 PM

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Competing for the first time in just over a month, the Division I Franklin & Marshall wrestling team traveled to Lehigh on Friday for the 2024 Sheridan Tournament. The Diplomats' tournament was highlighted by a fourth-place finish from Bryce Kresho at 141 lbs. Four other wrestlers came within just one match of the medal round during consolation semifinal action. No team scores were kept at this year's open tournament.

Kresho has now placed during each of the three tournaments that he has entered on the year. To do so, he had to win three consecutive wrestleback matches after a quarterfinal loss to the top seed from Lehigh. The junior captain started his run through the consolations with a high-scoring 21-15 decision against Indiana's Lucas Peters before two more decisions against foes from Brown. That included a takedown in the final seconds versus the Bears' Austin McBurney in a 5-3 match before he took fourth place in the field.

Jack Parker (125 lbs.), Luke Bender (157 lbs.), Josh Palmucci (165 lbs.), Dominic Wheatley (174 lbs.), and Nick Alvarez (174 lbs.) all advanced to the consolation semifinals. Alvarez had F&M's deepest run in the championship bracket as he received a bye into the quarterfinals before defeating the host's Liam Gil-Swiger by a 7-5 decision. Wheatley also defeated Gil-Swiger by a 7-2 score, but a pair of tight decisions against Brown and Indiana did not go in his favor.

Parker, Bender and Palmucci each won a pair of matches on the afternoon. All three wrestlers secured wins against their own teammates. Parker went on to earn a technical fall against the host Mountain Hawks in EIWA action. Bender followed that result up with a 5-1 EIWA victory against Drexel's Jayden Iznaga. Palmucci earned his second victory on the day when he defeated Brown's Harrison Trahan in a back-and-forth 12-11 decision.

Jack Parker (125 lbs.), James Garcia (125 lbs.), Pat Phillips (141 lbs.), Josh Hillard (149 lbs.), and Leo Varga (184 lbs.) also earned victories to advance to the consolation quarterfinals at their respective weights. Phillips – who was competing unattached – and Hillard both earned EIWA victories over Drexel. Garcia's win was a technical fall in just over four minutes against Jared Brunner of Brown.

Wrestling will now have just over a week off from competition before the Diplomats are slated to send three wrestlers to the prestigious Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. That tournament in Evanston, Illinois is slated to begin on Sunday, December 29 and continue through Monday, December 30.
