Softball Wins One on Day Three of Tucson Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. - Playing a triple-header on Tuesday afternoon, the Franklin & Marshall Softball team won one of its three games, defeating Sewanee while falling to Webster and Hartford.

Franklin & Marshall 0, Webster 4

Held to just four hits in the tilt, the Diplomats were blanked 4-0 against the Gorloks. Three of Webster's four run came in the bottom of the first, as each of its first five batters reached base safely en route to two runs scoring. Later in the frame, a fielding error allowed another run to come home, putting the Gorloks up 3-0.

Four innings later, Webster added another run to the board, following a lead-off double and an error. F&M's best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the seventh, when it put runners on first and second with one out. However, the Diplomats were unable to extend the rally, bringing the game to a close.

Aliza Sheflin (1-3) suffered the loss after allowing six hits and two earned runs.

Franklin & Marshall 6, Sewanee 3

Taking advantage of scoring opportunities early on in the contest, the Diplomats downed the Tigers 6-3. Putting runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the first, each of the next three batters recorded singles, with Nora Sidorski and Madison Martin each collecting a RBI in their respective at-bats.

After Sewanee put one run on the board in the bottom of the first, F&M continued its strong offensive output, as Alexa Klepper roped a lead-off triple in the top of the second before scoring on a throwing error in the next at-bat. The Diplomats then loaded the bases up once again, which led to a Megan Wiarda ground out that allowed Natalia Garza to score.

In the next frame, Klepper came up to the plate with runners on first and second, after which she drilled a RBI double to put F&M up 5-1.

The Tigers inched closer in the bottom of the fifth, though, as a two-out single, followed by back-to-back doubles led to two runs scoring to cut the deficit to two.

Sidorski tacked on one more insurance run for the Diplomats in the top of the sixth, knocking in Claire Sullivan with a RBI triple.

Trailing 6-3 and down to its final three outs, Sewanee put its lead-off hitter on base in the bottom of the seventh, but saw its next two batters get out. Back-to-back singles then loaded the bases for the Tigers, bringing the winning run to the plate. However, Ainsley McClure was able to induce a game-ending fly out to left center field, closing the door on a potential Sewanee comeback.

On the game, Sidorski and Klepper combined to hit 4-of-8 with three RBI and three extra-base hits. McClure (2-1) earned her second win of the season and posted her first complete game performance of the year.

Franklin & Marshall 2, Hartford 5

Despite staying within arm's reach of the Hawks for nearly the entire game, F&M was unable to keep pace with Hartford, falling 5-2. With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the first, Charlotte Dwyer was able to limit the damage to just one run after inducing a fielder's choice and striking out the next batter. However, a RBI double for the Hawks in the very next inning put Hartford up 2-0.

In the fifth inning, the Hawks were able to add two more runs to the board after their first four hitters of the frame reached base safely. Responding strongly, the Diplomats cut the deficit to two in the bottom half of the stanza, as Kate Clement and Jaden Spigner each recorded RBI singles.

Later trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Sidorski collected a lead off single before stealing second to kickstart a potential rally. However, she remained stranded, as the next two hitters got out to end the game.

Dwyer (0-2) absorbed the loss after allowing three hits and one earned run.

F&M will once again play a triple-header tomorrow, scheduled to face Saint Catherine, Eastern Connecticut State and Sul Ross State at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. (E.T.), respectively.
