Softball Sweeps on Senior Day

LANCASTER, Pa. - Honoring its graduating senior Maddy Yeingst before the game, the Franklin & Marshall Softball team swept Haverford at home, 8-0 and 10-6.

Game 1: Franklin & Marshall 8, Haverford 0

The Diplomats opened the day in dominant fashion, run ruling the Fords, 8-0. F&M got the scoring started in the bottom of the first, when it loaded the bases with no outs before Sophia Noriega singled through the left side to bring in the first run of the game. In the following at-bat, Madison Martin drilled a two-run double to left center to extend the lead to 3-0.

Two frames later, a throwing error by Haverford with runners on first and second allowed another run to score for the Diplomats. Hannah Matusiak then laid down a sacrifice bunt which knocked in Noriega from third to make it 5-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Alexa Klepper crushed a RBI double down the left field line and later scored on a double steal attempt as F&M took a 7-0 advantage. Then, with bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Natalia Garza singled to put the run rule into effect.

Charlotte Dwyer (2-4) allowed just four hits and struck out two batters in the complete game shutout.

Game 2: Franklin & Marshall 10, Haverford 6

In a high scoring battle, the Diplomats reached double-digit runs with a 10-6 win. The Fords broke the ice in their first time up to bat, as a double with runners on first and second scored both runs to make it 2-0. In the bottom half of the inning, however, F&M answered right back with Klepper tripling to right center before scoring on a Yeingst single. After Noreiga singled as well, Martin slammed a two-run triple to right center to put the Diplomats on top. She then came home on a Megan Wiarda RBI single, which made it 4-2.

In the very next inning, Garza drew a lead off walk and came home on a Klepper RBI double. Klepper then advanced to third before coming home on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder. Martin followed it up with a RBI double, as the Diplomats took a 7-2 lead.

With F&M later ahead 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth, Wiarda and Matusiak blasted back-to-back solo home runs to give the Diplomats a 10-4 advantage.

Haverford briefly rallied in the top of the seventh, putting runners on second and third with one out before two straight singles brought in a pair of runs. However, the Fords then stranded runners on second and third as Kayla Kilmer closed the game in relief.

Ainsley McClure (6-7) allowed four earned runs and struck out six batters in 6.1 innings of work in the win. Garza batted 3-for-7 with three runs scored and a run batted in across both games.

The Diplomats will now travel to Alvernia tomorrow for a doubleheader, set to begin at 1 p.m.
