BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Jack Parker and Josh Hillard both won individual pool titles while James Conway recorded a major decision against the 15th-ranked wrestler in the country and was a take down away from upsetting the fifth-ranked wrestler in the country to highlight Franklin & Marshall's day at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic.
Parker won the 125 lb. green pool as he went 3-0 with victories against Duke, Sacred Heart, and Columbia. Parker's most convincing win was a first period technical fall against his EIWA foe before a 5-4 win in the finals against Connor Smith of Columbia. Hillard defeated two EIWA foes after matching up against his own teammate during his first match. He then earned a 4-1 victory over Hofstra and used a six-point first period take down against Lehigh to complete his championship weekend.
James Conway was one of four Diplomats who placed second in their respective pools. Conway started his day with a technical fall before the 16th-ranked Diplomat scored 13 points during a major decision against InterMat's 15th-ranked grappler from Columbia. Conway continued to push the pace in his finals match, earning multiple stall calls along the way, before coming up just short on the match-tying takedown in a 7-4 final.
First-year Brandon Carr also placed second in the 174 lb. blue pool with three straight wins to close his day after a 6-5 setback during his only defeat. He pinned an EIWA opponent from Sacred Heart in just 45 seconds and notched two decisions over the Ivy League. Varga defeated two EIWA opponents with a 6-3 decision against Army and a fall against Sacred Heart before his only defeat came via a 2-0 decision in the finals to Lock Haven. Brody Kline (285 lb. red) started his day with back-to-back decisions against Clarion and Bloomsburg before running up against Appalachian State in the finals.
Mason Leiphart (133 lb. black) and Bryce Kresho (141 lb. black) were also nationally-ranked by several media outlets and placed fourth on Sunday. Leiphart's victory was a 7-0 blanking of his opponent from Columbia. Kresho defeated Harvard's Dante Frinzi by an 8-5 score before being defeated by Maryland's nationally-ranked Dario Lemus and falling to Kyren Butler (Virginia).
Pat Phillips (149 lbs.), Luke Bender (157 lbs.), Josh Palmucci (165 lbs.), Jesse Scott (165 lbs.), Dominic Wheatley (174 lbs.), and RJ Moore (197 lbs.) all had multiple wins throughout the day. Phillips defeated the eventual pool champion from Rutgers in his first match and had a victory against Virginia. Bender and Scott both defeated EIWA opponents from Sacred Heart and Army, while Palmucci had a fall and technical fall against Sacred Heart and Hofstra. Wheatley capped his multi-win day with a fall versus Columbia, while Moore defeated opponents from Appalachian State and Maryland. Brandon Sauter, CJ Ferree, and Nick Alvarez recorded bonus points during their victories, while Aidan O'Shea claimed a win against Columbia.
The upcoming week of wrestling action will be highlighted by the team's first dual of the season against LIU on Sunday, November 16 at 7 p.m. That match will also be Senior Day for the team. Prior to the home opener, several ndividuals will compete at Millersville's Shorty Hitchcock Memorial on Saturday, November 15.
