LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall wrestling team wrapped up the regular season by hosting the Second Annual F&M Invitational on Sunday afternoon inside the Mayser Center. Army, Drexel, Lehigh, and Penn also competed in the tournament which served as the team's final preparations before the postseason gets underway with the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships (EIWA) in two weeks.
Nick Alvarez (174 lbs.) and Quincy Long (285 lbs.) both finished with multiple victories throughout the day. Alvarez matched up twice with his own teammate, but also secured a 4-2 win against Lehigh's Justin Onello to move into the third-place match. His only loss came to the eventual champion at his weight. Long secured a pair of victories against Penn as he defeated the Quakers' Denzel Perez by an 18-3 technical fall in the third period before a medical forfeit helped him to finish fourth in the tournament. Long's technical fall was his second this season and gives him bonus points during six of his seven wins on the year.
In total, nine of the team's 10 entrants placed in the tournament as Vincent Gioffre and Aidan O'Shea both made the finals of their respective brackets. Dominic Wheatley added another bonus point victory to the team's total with his first period technical fall over Lehigh's Liam Gil-Swiger by a 17-2 score on his way to a fourth-place finish.
The Diplomats additionally sent three wrestlers to the George Mason Last Chance Open to compete unattached. The tournament was highlighted by a fifth-place finish from James Garcia and sixth-place showing from Seth Weaver. Garcia defeated George Mason's Geoffrey Whelan by a 10-4 score to earn his medal. Weaver matched up with teammate Kyle Deisley for a spot in the medal round to secure his spot on the podium. That came just one round after Deisley defeated Drexel's Roman Onorato by a 10-8 score.
Wrestling will now take the next two weeks to get prepared for the postseason as the EIWA Championships are slated for Friday, March 7 and Saturday, March 8 at Lehigh University. Bids to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will be on the line in Bethlehem, with the exact number of allocations at each weight to be announced this coming week.
