Softball Swept in Conference Conference Opener at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa.- The Franklin & Marshall softball team (5-11, 0-2 Centennial) lost both games inTuesday's Centennial Conference opener against Swarthmore (17-7, 4-0 Centennial), falling, 3-2, on a walk-off single in game one before suffering a 5-2 defeat in the second game of the evening.

Game One

A last-gasp two-run home run from Jaden Spigner in the top of the seventh to claim a 2-1 lead was undone by a two-run bottom of the seventh for the Garnet, who won the game, 3-2, on a walk-off single to right-center.

Charlotte Dwyer pitched 6.1 innings with two earned runs, five hits, four walks, and a strikeout, allowing just two hits through the first five innings.

Swarthmore shut down the Diplomats' offense for much of the game, allowing just one hit through the first six frames and 14 strikeouts.

The Garnet registered the first hit of the game in the bottom of the second on a leadoff single and advanced the runner on a bunt and groundout. Dwyer stranded the runner at third on a foul out.

Swarthmore took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, making use of a walk and stolen base with two outs. On the next at-bat, the swinging third strike was dropped, the hitter beat the throw to first base, and the runner from second base beat the throw back to the plate for Swarthmore's first run.

The next few innings featured few base runners from both sides, with Swarthmore stranding two runners in scoring position from the fourth inning through the sixth. F&M registered their first hit on a single from Sophia Noriega in the fifth.

The Diplomats rally began with a one-out Alexa Klepper single in the seventh. Two batters later with two outs, Spigner sent a ball well over the left-field fence to give the Diplomats a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Swarthmore got two runners aboard on singles and loaded the bases on a walk with no outs. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring the runner from third base home. This was followed by the game-winning hit, a line drive to the right center gap to easily score the winning run from third base.

Game Two

The Diplomats' two-run third inning shrank the Swarthmore lead to 3-2 before the Garnet answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, defeating F&M 5-2.

Noriega was 2-for-2 with one RBI, while Klepper had one hit, a double, and one RBI.

Swarthmore's leadoff hitter in the first walked and stole second base to quickly get a runner into scoring position. A groundout and infield single brought the runner home. They added two more runs in the second inning on a sequence of a solo homer, a triple, and a single for a 3-0 lead.

The Diplomats reduced the deficit with two runs in the top of the third, as Hillary Murse singled to get a runner aboard. Erika Stewart reached on a dropped third strike with two outs. Klepper followed this with a double to score one run, while Noriega singled to the left side to score the second run. Noriega was out attempting to advance to second base. Swarthmore swiftly countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning via a pair of doubles and a single.

The Diplomats were kept hitless in the final four innings, suffering a 5-2 defeat.

Franklin & Marshall hosts Lebanon Valley tomorrow, Wednesday, April 2, at 3:00 p.m. for the team's home opener.
