LANCASTER, Pa. – The No. 5 Franklin & Marshall women's lacrosse team got back to its winning ways on Wednesday night with a key rivalry victory against No. 4 Gettysburg. The Diplomats (9-1, 2-0 CC) and Bullets (9-2, 1-1 CC) were tied at five different times during the battle of the top-ranked teams in the Centennial Conference before Lauren Pittman's goal with 13:02 to play in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference in the 11-10 final.
Lane Lambeth led the F&M attack with four goals, while Lydia Cassilly matched that point total with three goals and one assist as she became just the sixth player in program history to reach 300 career points. Devyn Crone (2g, 2a) and Alexandra Proefrock (1g, 1a) both added multiple points to the Diplomats' winning effort.
Pittman's goal being the only scoring in the fourth quarter was a stark contrast to the first three quarters where the teams combined for 20 goals in just 45 minutes of play. The Bullets were up 3-2 after the first 15 minutes, with Lambeth and Cassilly getting their scoring performances underway. Lambeth added her next three goals during the second quarter as F&M scored five times during that period to take a 7-6 lead into the half. Proefrock and Cassilly also tallied just before the half.
Franklin & Marshall took its largest lead of the night at 10-7 with a pair of goals from Crone while Cassilly capped her hat trick during the third quarter. However, the Bullets were not going to go away easily as they tallied three times in the final five minutes of that period to tie the game at 10-all heading into the final 15 minutes.
Both goalies made two saves during the low scoring fourth quarter, but Pittman's goal at the 13:02 mark ultimately proved to be the difference as Sara DiGiovanni turned away 12 shots on the night. Her counterpart made nine saves as the Bullets held the slight edge in both shots (28-24) and shots on goal (20-17).
Franklin & Marshall gave itself plenty of chances in the offensive end by doubling up the Bullets in draw controls, 16-8. Pittman and Lambeth were instrumental in those efforts with eight and seven draw controls, respectively. Belle Dintino was another huge impact player on the defensive side of the field as she caused four turnovers and scooped up four ground balls in the victory.
With its sixth nationally-ranked win of the season, women's lacrosse will next battle for sole possession of first place in the Centennial Conference standings as No. 23 Haverford comes to campus this weekend for a 12 p.m. noon start. The Diplomats and Fords are both 2-0 in the early part of conference play and the only remaining unbeaten squads in Centennial Conference action.
