COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.- The Franklin & Marshall softball team (9-22, 4-10 Centennial) dropped both games at Ursinus (21-16, 9-7 Centennial) on Tuesday, losing, 3-2, on a walkoff in game one before falling, 6-0, in the second game. The day was highlighted by Kayla Kilmer reaching 100 career strikeouts, becoming the 18th player in program history to reach the figure.
Game One
After Megan Wiarda broke a 1-1 deadlock with an RBI single in the top of the seventh, Ursinus would come from behind in the bottom half to win the game, 3-2, on a two-RBI fielder's choice play.
Charlotte Dwyer pitched six innings, allowing one earned run, four hits, and two walks with three strikeouts.Â
Kate DelGrippo was 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Grace Header recorded a double and one run scored. Wiarda was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Alexa Klepper began the first inning with a single, while Gabby Mundy reached on a fielding error on her sacrifice bunt attempt Ursinus recorded outs on the next two at-bats, but DelGrippo delivered with a single to left field to give F&M a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Ursinus tied the game in the bottom of third, making use of a leadoff single and steal of second base. From there, a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third base, and a sacrifice fly tied the game.Â
Each team managed to get just one runner in scoring position between the fourth and sixth innings.
The Diplomats reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh following Header's leadoff double. Hillary advanced her 60 feet with a sacrifice bunt, while Wiarda gave F&M a lead with a single up the middle. Natalia Garza then put down a sacrifice bunt to put a runner at second base, but a flyout ended the inning.
Ursinus loaded the bases on three walks in the bottom of the seventh. Down to their last out, a ground ball was hit to second base, and the Bears' first-base runner reached the second base ahead of Klepper. In the process, two runners came across the plate to give Ursinus game one.
Game Two
F&M was kept to two hits in a 6-0 defeat in the second game.
In her 2.1 innings of one-run relief, Kilmer recorded two strikeouts to become the 18th Diplomat to get to 100 strikeouts. Aliza Sheflin pitched two inning with one earned run, four hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.
F&M's hits came from singles via Mundy and Madison Martin.
Ursinus scored two runs in the first inning on four hits and one error, with the second run coming on a two-out infield error. They added two more runs in the second inning with two outs on a run of two singles, with an error on the second single, and a double.
Ursinus scored one more run in the fourth inning on two hits and two hit batters, although they left the bases loaded. The story was similar in a one-run sixth inning, as they scored one run on three hits but left the bases full.
F&M's offense was kept to just one runner getting into scoring position across the seven innings.
The Diplomats play their final home series of the season when they host non-conference opponent York (Pa.) on Thursday, April 24, at 3:00 p.m.Â
