CHESTERTOWN, Md.- The Franklin & Marshall softball team (10-24, 4-12 Centennial) dropped both of its games in Saturday's season finale against Washington College (7-9, 12-24 Centennial), falling 4-3 on a walk-off in game one before suffering a 5-3 loss to conclude the day.
Game One
After F&M tied things up at 3-3 in the top of the seventh, Washington made use of the leadoff runner reaching third base with a walk-off sacrifice fly from the next hitter.
Alexa Klepper was 3-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI, and two runs scored. Gabby Mundy recorded a pair of singles, while Jaden Spigner went 1-for-3 with one RBI, a double, and one walk. Â
Charlotte Dwyer pitched five innings, allowing three earned runs, four hits, and two walks with four strikeouts.
The Diplomats got on the board in the top of the first following Klepper's leadoff single and a successful sacrifice bunt from Mundy. Spigner and Sophia Noriega walked to load the bases. Kate DelGrippo one run across the plate with a single to left field, although the runner from second was caught out at the plate. The inning ended with two runners on base on a lineout to the shortstop.
Washington leveled in the bottom of the first following a one-out double. A wild pitch moved the runner up one base, while a sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1.
Madison Martin singled in the top of the second, while Megan Wiarda converted another successful sacrifice bunt for F&M. Klepper brought a run home with a two-out double to the right-center gap for a 2-1 lead. The Shorewomen tied things up in the bottom of the third with back-to-back one-out doubles.Â
Washington College claimed the lead one inning later following a leadoff walk and a wild pitch put a runner on second base. A single up the middle put the hosts up, 3-2. The next closest chance for either team came in the bottom of the sixth, as Washington got two runners into scoring position with a one out via a double, infield error, and a steal of second base. DelGrippo, pitching in relief, escaped the inning with a popout and flyout.Â
F&M rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Klepper doubled again with one out, while a Mundy infield single put runners on the corners. Spigner tied the game with a double to the right center gap, putting the go-ahead run at third base. The Shorewomen kept the game tied via a groundout and popout.Â
In the bottom of the seventh, Washington's leadoff hitter doubled and advanced to third on an error. A sacrifice fly to center field earned the Shorewomen a walk-off win, mathematically ending Centennial Conference Tournament chances for the Diplomats. The Shorewomen were able to secure the fifth and final spot in the tournament.
Game Two
After claiming a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Diplomats were undone by a four-run fourth inning from the Shorewomen who eventually earned the sweep, 5-3.Â
Klepper had yet another three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a home run, one RBI, and two runs scored. Kate Clement was 3-for-3, while Spigner had a pair of hits, one RBI, and one run scored.
Ainsley McClure started in the circle and allowed no earned runs, one hit, and one walk with one strikeout through three innings.Â
Klepper yet again began a game with a leadoff single, while she soon reached third base on a groundout and wild pitch. Spigner's infield single brought her home, while Clement followed this with another single. The duo got into scoring position with a wild pitch, and Cate Shrader brought one runner home on a sacrifice fly before the end of the frame.
The Diplomats loaded the bases in the top of the third with one out but was unable to add to their lead. One inning later, Washington struck for four runs on four hits, one error, and one walk. F&M loaded the bases again in the sixth with one out, although Washington maintained their lead with a strikeout and fielder's choice.Â
Washington added one run in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of doubles.Â
Klepper got momentum going in the top of the seventh with a leadoff homer over the left-field fence, reducing the gap to 5-3. Spigner and Clement singled with one out, although the game ended with a flyout and groundout.
With Sunday's non-conference doubleheader at Marywood being canceled, F&M ended the 2025 season on Saturday with a 10-25, 4-12 Centennial Conference record.
