SOMERSET, N.J. – The Franklin & Marshall wrestling team sent 19 individuals to compete at Zingo Nationals on Sunday in those wrestlers final action of the season. Jack Parker came away with a third place finish to lead the Diplomats who saw 15 of their wrestlers win at least one match on the day.
Parker advanced to the semifinals with a technical fall against Monmouth's John Dooley and notched an EIWA major decision victory against Hofstra's Tommy Aiello, 8-0. Parker was only denied in the semifinals before he bounced back with his third bonus point victory of the day, an 18-7 major decision against Clarion's Easton Mull during the medal rounds.
Charlie Colantonio (133 lbs.), CJ Ferree (149 lbs.), and Leo Varga (197 lbs.) were just one match shy of placing. Colantonio secured a first period pin of Rider's Kyle Hill during the consolation rounds before matching up with an EIWA foe from Binghamton. Ferree earned a default win against Columbia and later secured bonus points during his match versus Hofstra's Cam Ice. Varga pulled through in overtime, securing a 4-1 victory against West Virginia's Alexander Berisha before falling to Kingston Daniells of Columbia just one match prior to the medal round.
Nick Alvarez and Kyle Deisley both won multiple matches in the 157 lb. bracket. Alvarez, a senior, started his tournament with an 11-7 victory against Penn's Wyatt Stout. He dropped a back-and-forth round of 16 match before getting past teammate Luke Bender in an 8-5 final during wrestleback action. Deisley secured three wins on the day with a decision, pin, and major decision during his final action of the collegiate season.
Ejiro Montoya (133 lbs.), Aidan O'Shea (149 lbs.), Billy Templeton (157 lbs.), Luke Bender (157 lbs.), and Tyler Fromm (165 lbs.) all secured bonus point victories during the open tournament on Sunday. Brayden Hartranft (141 lbs.), Seth Weaver (165 lbs.), Jesse Scott (165 lbs.), and Dylan Shelton (184 lbs.) also won matches during their final tournament of the college season.
The postseason is officially upon the team as the Diplomats travel to Washington, D.C. next week for the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championshps that will be hosted by American University. Bids to the Division I National Championship will be on the line as the tournament gets underway on Friday, March 6 and continues through Saturday, March 7. In addition to be the national qualifying event, the weekend will be memorable as David Lehman '68 will be inducted into the EIWA Hall of Fame for all that he has done for F&M wrestling and the greater wrestling community.
