LANCASTER, Pa.- The fourth-seeded Franklin & Marshall softball team's (17-20, 9-7 Centennial Conference) postseason return was cut short, as the Diplomats fell to fifth-seeded Haverford (26-11, 8-8 Centennial Conference) by an 11-3 scoreline in five innings in game one of the 2026 Centennial Conference Softball Tournament.
Abby Favazza recorded a solo home run, one of two hits for the Diplomats offense, while
Natalia Garza recorded a single and a run scored.
Haverford, the DIII leader in sacrifice bunts, began the contest with a leadoff single followed by a bunt that advanced the runner all the way to third base. A sacrifice fly to left field brought the runner home.
F&M claimed the lead in the bottom half of the frame. Garza singled, while
Gabby Mundy reached on an error on her sacrifice bunt attempt. A
Kate DelGrippo walk loaded the bases, while one run apiece would score on a fielder's choice play and an infield error, although the Diplomats would leave two runners in scoring position.
Haverford countered with a four-run second inning to lead, 5-2. The Fords loaded the bases with one out on a sequence of a hit batter, sacrifice bunt, and two-straight singles. With two outs, they claimed the lead back on a bases-clearing double, while one more runner crossed the plate on yet another double.
Favazza got one run back with her leadoff homer in the bottom of the second, although the next nine Diplomats would be retired in order.
The Fords added four more runs with two outs in the fourth inning on a rally that featured five-consecutive two-out singles. Haverford then reached the run-rule threshold with two runs in the fifth inning. Yet again, the Fords rallied with two outs on a run of a single, double, and single.
Cate Shrader walked to begin the bottom of the advance, and the runner advanced to third via back-to-back groundouts in hopes of keeping the game alive. The Fords wrapped up the game in five frames, however, with another groundout.
F&M ends the year with a 17-20, 9-7 Centennial Conference record, marking the team's second Centennial Conference Tournament appearance and 12th overall appearance in the postseason. 17 wins is the most in a season since the 2017 and 2018 seasons, while the nine Centennial Conference wins is the most since a 9-7 2015 performance.
