John Abercrombie joined the Franklin & Marshall swimming team as an assistant coach during the 2023-24 season. Abercrombie grew up in Boise, Idaho and swam for the Boise YMCA, where he still holds team and LSC records. He attended high school in Monterey, Calif. where he held six school and league records, was MVP during three consecutive seasons, and named a team captain. In college at the University of Southern California under six-time Olympic coach Mark Schubert, he was a three-time NCAA All-American, and won the 200 yard butterfly at PAC-10 championships. As a member of the United States National Team, he won a bronze medal at the 2003 World University Games. After training in Texas with coach Randy Reese, at the 2004 Olympic Trials he finished fifth in the 200m butterfly, and 6th in the 100m butterfly (also qualifying for trials in the 100m breast and 200m IM). After retiring from swimming, he taught sailing and managed a yacht charter company in Redondo Beach, Calif before moving to Pennsylvania.
