Ryan Sullivan began his collegiate coaching career at the University of Mary Washington, where he started as a volunteer assistant coach in 2020 and was promoted to an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator after his first season. With the Eagles, he led practices, created and managed meet line up sheets and monitored the well-being of student-athletes in and out of the pool. Sullivan was also responsible for Mary Washington’s recruiting coordination.

He also helped the team to eight program records in three seasons and earned Metropolitan Swimming Conference Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year in 2022 and 2023 after guiding the team to two straight conference championships. Mary Washington then realigned to the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship and won the conference championships and Women's Coaching Staff of the Year in 2024. Sullivan coached back-to-back top-25 NCAA Championship teams, a nine-time All-American, and five NCAA Championship qualifiers.

Sullivan coached for Penn State in the 2024-2025 school year, assisting with recruitment, travel organization, and primarily coaching the middle distance and stroke groups. Currently, Sullivan is the Director of Competitive Swimming at the Lancaster YMCA where he leads a team of over 160 athletes.
