Sean Doherty joined the Franklin & Marshall athletic department as the performance enhancement coach prior to the 2025-26 academic year. Doherty enhances the competitive performance of F&M's student-athletes through a focus on strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. He works closely with the Diplomats’ Sports Medicine team for the prevention of injuries and development of rehabilitation programs. In addition to the traditional duties associated with this position, he will provide oversight and management of the fitness and strength facilities while working with the entire student population to create a healthy lifestyle.
Doherty joins the Diplomats after spending seven years as the sports performance coach at Division I Villanova. In that role, Doherty directed the strength and conditioning efforts for the men’s lacrosse, volleyball, and tennis teams. Throughout his time at Villanova, Doherty had previously worked with the track & field, women’s lacrosse, field hockey, rowing, and football teams.
Doherty came to Villanova after a stint as an assistant strength coach at Loyola University Maryland, where he primarily worked with the cross country, tennis and swimming & diving teams. He began his career as an intern at his alma mater, the University of Montana, before becoming a graduate assistant with the Grizzlies. Doherty also worked as a strength and conditioning intern at Mount St. Mary's and USA Rugby. He has additional worked at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista and Elite Sports Performance, LLC.
Doherty earned a Bachelor of Science from Montana in 2016. A former football player at Montana, Doherty received a master’s degree in kinesiology and exercise science in 2018 while working with the football and track & field teams at his alma mater.
