Last Second Heroics Lead Swarthmore Past Franklin & Marshall 65-64 in Women's Basketball

SWARTHMORE, PA -- Alison Wolf scored off a Zoey Adams-Deutsch assist with 0.9 seconds left on the clock to give Swarthmore College a 65-64 victory over Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference women's basketball.

Leading 63-52 with 3:29 to play, the Garnet (8-5, 3-3 CC) saw their 11 point lead erased as the Diplomats (4-7, 4-3 CC) reeled off a 12-0 run capped by a pair of free-throws by point guard Dana Johns (So., York, PA/Eastern York) to take their first lead of the game at 64-63 with nine seconds remaining on the clock.

However, Wolf, who finished the game with seven points courtesy a three-for-six performance from the field, found the basket to give Swarthmore the one point victory.

Katie Robinson led Swarthmore with 11 rebounds, 11 steals and 22 points off 10-of-19 shooting from the field, while Jennifer Stevenson chipped in 12 points as the Garnet built a 33-27 lead in the first half and hung on for the victory.

The Garnet jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the in the first 66 seconds of play behind five points from Robinson. Franklin & Marshall stormed back to cut the margin to 13-12 with 11:37 left in the first half, but Swarthmore countered with a 10-0 run capped by a pair of field goals by Robinson and a three-pointer by Wolf to push the lead out to 11 points with 10:05 to go until intermission.

Trailing 33-23 with 1:45 left, Tracy Spinner (Sr., Pennington, NJ/Princeton Day) knocked down back-to-back field goals to slice the Garnet lead to six at 33-27 at halftime.

Swarthmore pushed the lead to 20 points in the opening minutes of the second half as the Garnet engineered a 22-8 run to lead 55-35 with 12:33 to go.

However, guard Courtney Tierney (Sr., Princeton, NJ/Hun School) led F&M back as she tallied four three-pointers down the stretch as the Diplomats outscored Swarthmore 28-8 to knot the game at 63-63 and take a one point lead before Wolf's last-second shot decided the game.

For the Diplomats Tierney led the way with 19 points on six-for-eleven shooting from the field, including a perfect four-for-four from the three-point line, while center Amy Abernathy (Sr., Far Hills, NJ/American School-Paris) registered a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Franklin & Marshall will return to action on January 17 at home versus Washington College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
