Tierney Terrorizes Dickinson for 21 Points as Diplomats Capture 51-43 Win in Women's Basketball

CARLISLE, PA -- Guard Courtney Tierney (Sr., Princeton, NJ/Hun School) hit six-of-15 from the floor, including three-of-five from beyond the arc, and six-of-eight from the free-throw line for 21 points to lead the Franklin & Marshall College women's basketball team to a 51-43 come from behind victory at Dickinson College.

Trailing 27-22 at halftime, the Diplomats (6-7, 6-3 CC) defense stiffened and Tierney found her shot as the second year transfer student from Division I Farleigh Dickinson-Metropolitan hit four-of-six from the field, including three-of-three from beyond the arc, for 15 second half points as F&M outscored the Red Devils (8-4, 5-2 CC) 29-16 down the stretch.

The victory was closer than the eight point margin of victory would indicate as Dickinson led by one with 1:50 to go before Tierney drained a three-pointer to put F&M ahead by two with 1:27 to go. Still leading by two with 40 seconds remaining on the clock, Tierney made both ends of a one-and-one to put her team in front by four. Ann Parker (Sr., Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame) and Amy Hofmann (Sr., Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser) both made pairs of free-throws as the Diplomats closed out the game with six straight free-throws to take the eight point win.

A key to the victory was the play of center Amy Abernathy (Sr., Far Hills, NJ/American School-Paris) who tallied 14 points and nine rebounds with three blocked shots. Historically, Abernathy finished the game two rebounds short of becoming the third Diplomats' women's basketball player to register 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds during a career.

Overall, she now has 1,271 points, 998 rebounds and 209 blocked shots during her career as she can join Anne Krumrine '90 and Tina Breithaupt '94 as the only players in program history to finish with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in their careers in the Diplomats' next contest.

Forward Lauren Dodrill (Jr., Timonium, MD/Roland Park) added 11 rebounds and two points with a pair of blocked shots, while point guard Dana Johns (So., York, PA/Eastern York) chipped in six points with four assists as F&M shot 18-of-54 from the field, including nine-of-21 in the second half.

In the first half, the game belonged to Dickinson's Allyson Teatom as she connected on six-of-10 from the field and two-of-four at the free-throw line for 14 points with seven rebounds in five minutes of play. Overall, the Red Devils struggled from the field in the opening frame as they connected on nine-of-28 from the floor and nine-of-12 from the free-throw line while committing nine turnovers.

For F&M, Johns, Abernathy and Tierney led the way with six points as the Diplomats connected on nine-of-33 from the field, one-of-nine from beyond the arc and three-of-seven at the charity stripe while committing nine turnovers.

Teatom finished the game with 15 points and 11 rebounds in 27 minutes of play to lead Dickinson. Patrice Johnson and Jayme Frazier both added seven points, and Christine Giordano added six markers with five assists as Dickinson falls to 18-35 all-time against Franklin & Marshall.

F&M will continue the season on January 24 at home versus Haverford College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
