Gettysburg Musters Comeback to Survive Franklin & Marshall 3-2 in Volleyball

GETTYSBURG, PA -- Gettysburg College jumped out to a 2-0 lead courtesy 30-20 and 30-27 wins in the first two games, but the Bullets had to mount a fifth game comeback to dodge Franklin & Marshall College 3-2 in Centennial Conference women's volleyball action.

Gettysburg pulled away to a 12-2 lead in the first game, but the Diplomats chipped away to pull within 17-12 before the Bullets used a 13-8 run to take the game.

The Bullets and Diplomats battled back-and-forth in game two before Gettysburg used an F&M service error and a kill by Erin Barkdoll to take a 17-15 lead. Franklin & Marshall pulled to within 22-21 following a kill by Kayleen Bailey (Jr., Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame), but Gettysburg outscored the Diplomats the rest of the way for a 30-27 win.

Franklin & Marshall rallied in game three taking Gettysburg the distance before winning 34-32. Tied at 13-13, F&M built a two-point lead as Bailey and Nicole Kushman (So., Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West) swatted kills for a 15-13 advantage. Gettysburg responded to halve the lead, but Franklin & Marshall scored the next three points to hold an 18-15 lead. Trailing 29-27, Gettysburg knotted the match at 30-30 before Nicole Barr knocked down a kill to put the Bullets ahead 31-30. Facing a three game sweep, Megan Baker (Fr., Glenville, PA/South Western) registered back-to-back kills to give F&M back the lead at 32-31. Jessica Cortese scored a kill to pull the Bullets even at 32-32, but attack errors by Erica Rau and Cortese gave the Diplomats a two point win in the game.

Trailing 16-15 in game four, Franklin & Marshall used a four point swing via a pair of kills by Baker, an attack error by Margaret Hallahan and a ball handling error by Jessica Cortese to take a 19-16 lead on the way to a 30-27 win to even the match up at two game a piece.

In game five, Gettysburg jumped out to a 9-3 lead and held on for the win 15-5 as Cortese knocked down a kill for the final point in the 3-2 victory.

For Gettysburg, Nicole Barr registered 26 kills on 62 attack attempts, while Shannan Smith tallied 52 assists as the Bullets improve to 16-2, 5-0 in the Centennial Conference.

Bailey finished with 11 kills on 32 attack attempts and four service aces for the Diplomats, Kushman added nine kills and two aces with 11 digs and libero Meghan Godorov (Jr., Orefield, PA/Parkland) chipped in 36 digs and two service aces. At setter, Jackie Skibbie (Jr., Darby, PA/Merion Mercy) tallied 38 assists, five kills and 13 digs to aid in the effort.

Franklin & Marshall (9-4, 4-1) will continue the season on October 8-9 at the Widener University Invitational.
