LANCASTER, PA - The #8 seed Lebanon Valley Dutchmen upset #1 seed Franklin & Marshall College 3-1 in the opening round of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Field Hockey Tournament.
The Dutchmen jumped on the board nineteen minutes into the contest as Shauna Enck found the back of the cage for an unassisted goal and a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, LVC struck again as Mimi Sullivan scored for a 2-0 lead with 11:42 left in the first half.
The Diplomats responded as Brenna Dolphin (Jr., Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) redirected a Maggie Onasch (So., Bowling Green, OH/Maumee Valley) pass into the back of the cage at 26:33 to cut the lead to 2-1. However, Lebanon Valley countered before halftime as Alyssa Stine scored an unassisted goal with under four minutes left in the half for a 3-1 advantage heading into halftime.
Neither team was able to break the others defense in the second half as the Dutchmen escaped Lancaster with the victory.
In the cage, Michelle Altman (Jr., Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) recorded 11 saves in 60 minutes of action before being lifted for Lindsay Klimik (Jr., Brick, NJ/Brick) who recorded four saves in 10 minutes of action. LVC's Katie Pawliewicz stopped six shots in 70 minutes of work.
Lebanon Valley advances to face #4 Manhattanville which defeated #5 Montclair State 2-1. In other first round action, #2 Alvernia knocked off #7 William Paterson 5-0 and #3 Utica upended #6 Oneonta 2-1.
The semifinals and finals will be hosted on November 13-14 at Alvernia College, which earned the right as the highest remaining seed in the tournament. Game times have not been set at this time.
Franklin & Marshall College concludes the season with a 16-5 overall record, as the team tied the program single season wins mark held by the 1982 Diplomats (16-3-1), and established a new scoring mark with 74 goals.
