GETTYSBURG, PA - Gettysburg College's Kathy Delauney scored six goals, including the game-winner with 16:23 left in the game, as the Bullets escaped with a 15-10 win over Franklin & Marshall College in women's lacrosse.
The #5 ranked Bullets (8-1, 3-0 Centennial Conference) ran out to an early 3-0 lead in the game as Amy Farrell scored an unassisted goal at 8:54 before Delauney found the back of the net at 10:09 and 12:14 with unassisted markers.
#16 ranked Franklin & Marshall cut the lead to two goals 43 seconds later as Eileen Keever (So., Prospect Park, PA/Interboro) buried a feed from Sloan Giampa (Fr., Cortlandt Park, NY/Yorktown) for a 3-1 game.
Gettysburg responded as Jenn Kelly tallied an unassisted score at 14:26 before Alexis O'Meara (Jr., Annapolis, MD/Severn School) finished an assist from Kiki Foster (So., Denver, CO/Kent Denver) at 17:14 to keep the difference at a pair of scores.
However, the Bullets pulled away as Cassidy Zappacosta finished an assist from Julika Blankenship at 18:28, Delauney registered unassisted goals at 21:50 and 25:10 and Katie Lowe fired in a marker at 22:38 for an 8-2 lead with less than five minutes to play in the first half.
The Diplomats scored again at 29:39 to enter the locker room down by five goals as Foster beat her defender and ripped a shot past Gettysburg goalie Liz Borucki for a score off an assist by Keever by an 8-3 game at the break.
Gettysburg needed 20 seconds in the second half to get the goal back as Delauney completed an assist by Quinn Dougherty for a 9-3 lead. The lead grew to seven goals 17 seconds later as Dougherty buried an unassisted score at 30:37 for a 10-3 lead.
The Diplomats defense stiffened, however, shutting down the Bullets offense and setting up their own goal scorers as Keever scored off a free position shot at 32:01 to ignite a comeback attempt.
Franklin & Marshall shaved the margin down to 10-7 as O'Meara scored off an assist from Brenna Dolphin (Fr., Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) at 34:01 before O'Meara and Foster added scores off free position shots at 37:28 and 38:18, respectively.
However, Gettysburg's offense came to life as the Bullets' Delauney (43:37), Blankenship (45:28) and Kelly (50:36) scored off free position shots, while Ellie Shihadeh tacked on an unassisted score at 45:49 for four unanswered goals and a 14-7 lead.
The Diplomats attempted to stage a comeback over the final 10 minutes of play as Beverly Menghetti (Fr., Glen Mills, PA/Penncrest) fired in an assist from Foster at 52:25 and Kelly Cassels (Fr., Downingtown, PA/Great Valley) completed an assist from Alexis O'Meara at 53:33 to move within 14-9 with less than seven minutes to play.
Gettysburg put an end to the comeback 35 seconds later as Farrell added an unassisted score to push the lead out to 15-9 before Allison O'Meara (Jr., Annapolis, MD/Severn School) topped off the scoring with a goal off an assist from twin sister Alexis at 55:58.
In goal, Leslie Staines (Fr., Villanova, PA/Radnor) made four saves with 10 goals allowed in 34 minutes of action before Kim Pleasants (Fr., Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) closed out the game with seven saves and five goals allowed over the final 26 minutes of play. For the Bullets, Liz Borucki stopped six of F&M's 27 goals while allowing 10 goals.
F&M (3-4, 1-1 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 3 at Ursinus College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
