Box Score 2 ALLENTOWN, PA -- Pitcher Alison Barrett (Sr., South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) took the 1-0 loss in game one, earned the win in relief in a 5-4 game two victory and went four-for-seven at the plate with a run scored and an RBI as the Franklin & Marshall College softball team split a Centennial Conference doubleheader at Muhlenberg College.
In game one, Muhlenberg's Danielle DeLucia threw a four-hit shutout to lead the Mules to a 1-0 win.
Muhlenberg scored their only run off F&M starting pitcher Barrett as Nicole Sarno slapped an infield hit and scored the game's only run on back-to-back passed balls in the first inning.
DeLucia made the run stand up by giving up just two hits in the first six innings and striking out the final hitter with the potential winning run on second base in the seventh to complete her 11th career shutout.
For the Diplomats (6-8, 3-3 Centennial Conference), Barrett went two-for-three, while Allison Pavero (So., Malvern, PA/Notre Dame Academy) and Morgan Marks (Fr., Furlong, PA/Central Bucks East) both went one-for-three at the plate. On the mound, Barrett went six innings allowing one run on six hits while striking out two batters.
Barrett avenged the loss in game two hurling two innings of two hit relief with a pair of strikeouts to pick up the victory in a 5-4 comeback win.
The Mules (9-7, 2-4 Centennial Conference) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game on a two-run double by sophomore Missy DeFrain, followed by a one-run triple from senior Jackie Maser off F&M starting pitcher Jen Fried (Jr., Reisterstown, MD/Franklin).
The teams traded runs in the fifth as Fried singled to right field to plate Kristyn Miller (So., Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) as the Diplomats entered the sixth inning trailing 4-1.
In the sixth, Pavero singled to left-centerfield and moved to second on a wild pitch. Barrett doubled to left field to score Pavero and Marks doubled to right field to plate Barrett to make the score 4-3 with no outs. Following a foul-out and a sacrifice to move Marks to third, Leah Shams-Molkara (Sr., Eastchester, NY/Tuckahoe) singled to right field to bring in Marks and knot the score at 4-4.
The Diplomats scored the winning run in the seventh as Laura DePalma (Jr., Toms River, NJ/Toms River) drew a one out walk and came across the plate as Pavero doubled down the left-field line for the 5-4 victory.
Franklin & Marshall did not make the bottom of the seventh inning easy as a leadoff single and two errors loaded the bases before Barrett escaped the jam by fanning Katie Olson to close out the game.
The win improves F&M to 8-30 all-time against Muhlenberg as the Diplomats split a doubleheader with the Mules (4-2 L, 5-2 W) last year.
Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on April 6 at Haverford in a Centennial Conference doubleheader. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
