LANCASTER, PA -- Eileen Keever (Jr., Prospect Park, PA/Interboro) scored twice and added an assist in a 3-2 victory over Catholic University of America in the Diplomats' 2004 field hockey season opener.
Tied 1-1 at halftime, Keever found the back of the cage for the game winner 1:58 into the second half as she used an assist from Lindsay Mohr (Sr., Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) to score the go-ahead goal. The game-winner came 18 seconds later as Lindsey Mummert (So., New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) scored off an assist from Keever to take a 3-1 lead.
The Cardinals attempted to mount a comeback in the final minute as Jamie Punyko netted a goal off an assist from Christy Engstrom for the 3-2 final.
F&M never trailed in the game as the Diplomats jumped on the board midway through the first half as Keever scored an unassisted goal with 15:35 left until intermission. Catholic responded less than eight minutes later as Jayme Dinsmore connected on an assist from Engstrom to knot the game at the break.
The action swayed back-and-forth for the remainder of the first half as Franklin & Marshall goalie Michele Altman (Jr., Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) finished with six saves, including five in the first half, to hold the Cardinals in check until the final minutes of the game.
The victory raises the Diplomats' record to 6-5 all-time against Catholic and marks the fifth straight season-opening win for the Franklin & Marshall College field hockey team dating back to a 2-1 loss to York College of Pennsylvania on September 2, 1999.
Franklin & Marshall (1-0. 0-0 CC) will return to action on September 4th when the team travels to Madison, New Jersey to compete in the Drew University Tournament versus DeSales University in the first game in the history of Bulldogs' field hockey.
