Washington Sweeps Franklin & Marshall 9-2 & 5-4 in Softball

CHESTERTOWN, MD - Washington College's Amanda Campbell singled to drive in Laura Mozzer in the bottom of the seventh inning in game two to complete a sweep as the Shorewomen defeated Franklin & Marshall College in a Centennial Conference softball double-header 9-2 and 5-4.

Franklin & Marshall took the lead in game two as Bonnie Crouthamel (Fr., Chatham, NJ/Chatham) and Laura DePalma (Sr., Toms River, NJ/Toms River) both singled before Morgan Marks (So., Furlong, PA/Central Bucks East) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Erin Benjamin (Sr., Mt. Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) walked to force in a run and Kathleen Clinchy (Fr., Katonah, NY/Somers) singled to drive in DePalma for a 2-0 lead.

Washington cut the lead in half in the second inning as Kim Proctor singled, Campbell walked and Andrea Braverman singled to load the bases. Batting with two outs, Meg Lucas walked to force in a run and slice the Diplomats' lead to 2-1.

Campbell gave Washington its first lead of the second game with a three-run home run in the third inning to put the Shorewomen up 4-2.

Franklin & Marshall rallied to tie the game with solo runs in the sixth and seventh as Meghan Baker (Fr., Glenville, PA/South Western) homered to lead off the sixth and Marks scored on a fielder's choice ground out by Jonelle Coletta (Sr., Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) in the top of the seventh.

However, Washington loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh as Mozzer walked, Kim Proctor singled and Laura Scimeca reached on an infield error to bring Campbell to the plate with one out for the game-winning single.

In the pitching circle, Crouthamel took the loss going 6.1 innings allowing five runs on eight hits and five walks with nine strikeouts, while Michelle Laque earned the win for Washington allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks with six strikeouts.

In game one, the Diplomats opened the scoring in the first inning as Dana Johns (Jr., York, PA/Eastern York) singled, stole second base and moved to third on an error. Following back-to-back pop-ups, Marks singled to plate Johns for a 1-0 Franklin & Marshall College lead.

Washington tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Beth Ann Hartman walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored as Diane Green roped an RBI double.

F&M retook the lead in the second inning as Benjamin walked and Coletta singled to leftfield as both runners advanced a base on an error by the leftfielder. Benjamin came in to score as Baker lined a shot at third base for an error and a 2-1 Diplomats' lead.

However, Washington tacked on four runs in the third inning as Mozzer walked and scored on a two-run homer by Green, Campbell singled home a run and Maria Hogg lofted a sacrifice fly to plate a run.

The Shorewomen added single runs in the fourth and sixth and a pair of runs in the fifth for the 9-2 final.

Laura Kaesshaefer (Fr., Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter) took the loss for the Diplomats allowing four runs on four hits and two walks in one inning in relief. Green earned the win for Washington allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Franklin & Marshall (3-17, 1-5 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 12 versus Haverford in a Centennial Conference doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 3:30 p.m.
