Box Score 2 COLLEGEVILLE, PA - Ursinus College pitcher Mallory Greene twirled a 7-0 three hit shutout and Erin Skinner and Katie Norton combined on a 5-0 two hit shutout as the Bears defeated visiting Franklin & Marshall College in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader.
Ursinus (22-6, 6-1 Centennial Conference) jumped on the board in the first inning in game one with five runs on four hits and two walks for all Greene needed to earn the win.
The Bears tacked on two runs in the fourth on three hits and two errors in the 7-0 win.
For Franklin & Marshall, Morgan Marks (So., Furlong, PA/Central Bucks East) singled to lead off the second inning, Liz Iannaconi (Fr., Palisades Park, NJ/Dwight Englewood) singled to lead off the third inning and Dana Johns (Jr., York, PA/Eastern York) singled to lead off the sixth inning to account for the Diplomats' hits.
Overall, Greene went seven innings allowing three hits and no walks with 13 strikeouts to take the win, while Ali Tyler (Fr., Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) took the loss allowing five runs on four hits and two walks with a strikeout before being relieved by Laura Kaesshaefer (Fr., Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter) who allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout in five innings.
In game two, Skinner went five innings allowing one hit with seven strikeouts to earn the win, and Norton finished the game with two inning of work allowing one hit for a 5-0 victory.
Franklin & Marshall College pitcher Jonelle Coletta (Sr., Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) kept the game close allowing four runs on six hits with no walks and a strikeout in five and a third innings. Bonnie Crouthamel (Fr., Chatham, NJ/Chatham) finished the game going two thirds of an inning allowing one run on one hit.
The Bears opened the scoring in the first inning as Mary Reid doubled to plate Marci Logan with the winning run.
Coletta shut Ursinus down in the second, third and fourth innings before the Bears Erin McHugh reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Elizabeth Carino in the fifth inning for a 2-0 lead.
Ursinus took command of the game in the sixth as the Bears scored three runs on three hits, an error and two passed balls for the 5-0 final score.
For Ursinus, Carino led the way going two-for-three with two runs scored, a double and an RBI, while Kelly DeBow was two-for-two with a run scored.
The key to the game was the pitching performance of Skinner and Norton as Skinner allowed a leadoff double to Laura DePalma (Sr., Toms River, NJ/Toms River) in the fourth inning and Johns doubled off Norton with one out in the sixth to account for the Diplomats' hits.
The losses mark the sixth and seventh straight to Ursinus as F&M is now 15-29 against the Bears and has not defeated Ursinus since a 4-3 victory in Lancaster on April 18, 2002.
Franklin & Marshall (4-22, 2-8 Centennial Conference) will return to action on April 19 at Gettysburg College for a Centennial Conference doubleheader.
