York Downs Franklin & Marshall 9-1 & 4-1 in Softball Doubleheader

YORK, PA - Shannon Fry and Megan Mickles combined to throw 13 innings allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts as the York College Spartans swept Franklin & Marshall 9-1 and 4-1 in a non-conference softball doubleheader at Spartan Field,

In game one, Fry went six innings allowing one runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts as the Spartans (27-15, 6-2 Capital Athletic Conference) recorded a 9-1 win.

Franklin & Marshall opened the scoring as Morgan Marks (So., Furlong, PA/CB East) walked and Kathleen Clinchy (Fr., Katonah, NY/Somers) doubled down the left field line to put two runners in scoring position with no outs in the second inning. Following a ground out, Jonelle Coletta (Sr., Pt. Pleasant Beach, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Beach) singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Marks for a 1-0 lead.

York responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs to take the lead. The Spartans tacked on two runs in the third, one in the fourth and four in the sixth for a 9-1 lead as the game was called with one out in the sixth.

For F&M, Laura DePalma (Sr., Toms River, NJ/Toms River), Clinchy and Coletta recorded hits, while Bonnie Crouthamel (Fr., Chatham, NJ/Chatham) took the loss allowing four runs on four hits with six walks and three strikeouts. Laura Kaesshaefer (Fr., Philadelphia, PA/Penn Charter) finished the game going 3.1 innings allowing five runs on nine hits with one strikeout.

Laura Hauck was two-for-three with three runs scored for York, while Caitlyn Fedorishen was three-for-four with three RBI.

In game two, Kari Meachem went two-for-three with two runs scored for York, while Mickles fanned seven in seven innings to record a 4-1 win.

The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Meachem walked, stole second base, stole third base and scored on an infield error on a ground ball by Hauck for a 1-0 lead. Harper Cornell singled and moved to second on a fielding error in left field to put runners on second and third with one out. Fedorishen singled to left field to drive in Hauck to put York in front to stay.

The Diplomats cut the lead to one run as DePalma doubled to left field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Clinchy after a sacrifice bunt by Marks to make it a 2-1 game in the fourth.

However, York responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning as Hauck doubled to left center field to drive in Meachem and Brittany Malarkey for the 4-1 final.

For F&M, Ali Tyler (Fr., Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) took the loss allowing two runs on four hits and one walk with a strikeout in two innings of work. Coletta finished the game going three innings allowing two runs on three hits and one walk with a strikeout.

Franklin & Marshall (5-27, 3-11 Centennial Conference) will conclude the season on April 26 at home versus Dickinson College. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
