Box Score LANCASTER, PA - Outside hitter Nicole Kushman (Jr., Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West) tallied four kills, six service aces, and 10 digs to lead the Franklin & Marshall volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-27, 30-26, 30-12) victory over Swarthmore College in Centennial Conference action at the Mayser Center.
Franklin & Marshall (8-1, 2-0 Centennial Conference) took control of game one as libero Meghan Godorov (Sr., Orefield, PA/Parkland) led the team on a 6-0 service run to open the game. Swarthmore (6-4, 0-1 CC) rallied back to pull within two points at 24-22, but the Diplomats closed out the game to hold on for a 30-27 win.
Trailing the Garnet Tide 11-5 in game two, the Diplomats were forced to call a timeout. After the break, Godorov started a 3-0 rally before Kushman reeled off 10 straight points on serve to inch back into the game. Swarthmore attempted to fight back, but a 5-0 service run by setter Jackie Skibbie (Sr., Darby, PA/Merion Mercy) secured a 30-26 victory for the Diplomats.
In the final game of the night, outside hitter Jenna Walck (So., Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) helped the Diplomats jump out to a 15-7 lead. Unable to make a significant comeback, the Garnet fell 30-12 in the concluding game as the Diplomats secured their sixth 3-0 victory of the season.
A key to the Diplomats success in the match was the play of outside hitter Margot Phelan (Fr., Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) who totaled 16 kills to lead the team's offensive effort.
Historically, F&M is 27-4 against Swarthmore as F&M has won the last 15 meetings between the two programs.
Franklin & Marshall will continue Centennial Conference play on September 24 versus Haverford College at the Mayser Center. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
